Cathy Seipp shares her “thoughts” about gay marriage over at Lynne Cheney’s favorite website, the Independent Women’s Forum. And although many utterly moronic arguments against gay marriage have been made, Cathy comes up with a new one that is perhaps the most profoundly stupid such argument to have been advanced so far:
Declining to legally recognize gay marriage may be mistaken, but I don’t see that it takes rights away from gays, despite all the increasingly hysterical arguments to the contrary. You can’t take away something that has never, in the history of the human race, existed in the first place.
Which could also be said, at some point in history, about every basic civil right. Not that long ago one could have said “it might be wrong not to permit blacks to vote, but it doesn’t take rights away from them because they never had that right in the first place.”
