"Rights are for the Christian Right Only" (12/18/2004)
A
new poll conducted by the Cornell Media & Society Research Group finds that curtailing the civil rights of Muslim-Americans is supported in greater numbers by church-goers and Republicans than by other groups. Quelle surprise!
In particular, 42 percent of the highly religious want Muslim-Americans to register with the federal government as opposed to 15 percent of the less religious. Respondents were classified as highly religious if they claim to attend a church, believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible, call themselves "evangelical" and believe that the emergence of the state of Israel and the Second Coming are interconnected. So I wonder: if these people, who claim to believe that Jesus really said "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," were told by Muslims to report to DHS to register themselves, what kind of holy hell do you think there would be to pay?
